The Future of Compliance
Carbon reporting is no longer just for large corporations. New UK laws and supply chain pressures are making verifiable carbon data a mandatory requirement for SMEs.
The UK Reporting Roadmap
Key milestones in the transition to mandatory SME reporting.
NHS & Public Tenders
Under the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap (Dec 2024 update), compliance is now tiered by contract value:
- Contracts >£5m: Full Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) required as per PPN 006 (formerly PPN 06/21).
- Contracts £10k – £5m: Mandatory Net Zero Commitment (NZC) must be published on the supplier's website.
- Note: All new framework agreements require a full CRP, regardless of contract value.
Anti-Greenwashing Laws
New FCA and CMA regulations empower authorities to fine any business making unsubstantiated environmental claims. Verified carbon data becomes the only legal protection for "green" marketing.
UK SRS Expansion
The UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS) are projected to expand mandatory disclosure to economically significant private companies, bringing thousands of medium-sized businesses into scope.
Interim Net Zero Target
Under the UK's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement, the target is to reduce emissions by 68% (vs 1990 levels) by 2030. The 6th Carbon Budget (2033–2037) under the Climate Change Act 2008 further commits the UK to a 78% reduction by 2035. By this point, carbon performance will be as standard a metric as annual turnover for every business or contractor.
The "Scope 3" Effect
Large corporations (FTSE 100/250) are now mandated to report their Scope 3 emissions—which includes the footprint of their entire supply chain.
Supplier Selection
Procurement teams are prioritizing suppliers who can provide verifiable carbon data to lower their own footprint.
Commercial Risk
Failing to provide carbon data is increasingly becoming a "disqualifier" in major B2B (Business-to-Business) contract negotiations.
